A Daly Devotional to encourage believers to reach for their bibles.

The River

Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river, that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over”. Ezek 47 v 5

Today while driving in Eastbourne , I passed by a postman. He was standing at the kerb waiting to cross. It was difficult for him as the flow of fast moving traffic prevented him. Had I seen him earlier I could have stopped but by the time noticed him, it was too late, I had passed by. I wondered how long he would have to wait to cross over? It looked impossible. Math 19 v 26

Moses faced a much larger problem when he led Israel out of the bondage of Egypt . The Red Seamust have looked formidable. The mountains on side, the furious Pharaoh and his host in chariot’s pursuing behind, and seemingly no way of escape.1 Cor 10 v 13

Did Moses forget that he had the rod of God in his hand? Had he forgotten the miracles of deliverance in Egypt ?

 Ex 4 V 17

As a child I remember the story of the river, the straw, the burning coal and the pea. When they came to the river the straw laid across it, the burning coal got half way across the river before the straw caught alight and the pea split its side in laughter.

Sometimes the way ahead is blocked. There is no way forward, no way right or left, no way back. Are we going to surrender to adverse circumstances or are we going to find a way through. “With every testing he will make a way of escape.  Some of those British airmen in prison in a fortress like prison, a castle with impregnable defences, made their escape. Some tunnelled, some disguised them selves, and others escaped over the walls like Rahab and Paul. Josh 6 v 25 Acts 9 V 25

In the vision, Ezekiel saw the river as life giving. The tree’s flourished and the fish multiplied. ” And it shall come to pass that every living thing that moveth, withersoever the rivers shall come shall live. And there shall be a very great multitude of fish because these waters shall come-hither.  For they shall be healed. And every thing shall live whither the river shall come.

 Ezek 47 V 9

Amazing life-giving waters. When the sons of the prophets in Gilgal made camp they faced adversity with famine in the land. Then to make matters worse one threw into the pot wild gourds, which were poisonous. They came to Elisha complaining; “O man of God there is death in the pot”.  Elisha knew how to overcome. Bring me meal!

 2 Kings 4 v 40

A river can be destructive as it was for Pharaoh and his army for the waters covered them. But for Gods chosen people Israel the waters stood up either side of them in huge banks while they passed safely through. In many parts of the world there have been destructive floods, sweeping all before them. The floodwaters become a raging a torrent, in which nothing can survive. Ex 14 v 21

Jesus said, “He that believeth on me as the Scripture hath said, out of your bellies shall flow rivers of living waters” John 7 v 38

Building Walls

This morning I have been in the garden laying out a new arrangement with bricks and slabs. Part of this new design was in building a new wall. I had obtained some bricks that interlocked and only needed to be laid with a minimum of cement.

As I worked I thought of the rebuilding of the Temple under Nehemiah. The walls of Jerusalem were in ruins, He wept and prayed and then with Gods help returned to rebuild. “Let us build up the walls of Jerusalem , that we be no more a reproach”. Neh 2 v 17b

Then I thought of the building of the Temple under Solomon. How those huge stones needed only to be laid upon one another. No sound of a hammer was to be heard. “And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer or axe nor any tool of iron heard in that house, while it was in building”. 1 Kings 6 v 7

How many lessons there are for us in the building and the rebuilding of Temples ? And Jesus went out, and departed from the Temple : and his disciples came to him for to show him the buildings of the Temple . And Jesus said unto them, see ye not all these things? Verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down”.

Math 24 v 1/2

In Solomon’s Temple perfection was required. The Lord Jesus is that stone of perfection who is,  “Cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet, that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces…And the stone that smote the image, became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. Here in shadow and type is the Lord Jesus the rock, who comes to bring in a new everlasting Kingdom of righteousness. Dan 2 v 34/35”

And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these other kingdoms, and it shall stand forever”. Dan 2 v 44

Both Solomon’s Temple , and Herod’s Temple , were destroyed even though they used the most perfect materials and were build under Gods pattern.

What skilled men are needed to build Gods work. I remembered the skill, wisdom and knowledge God gave to, Be’zal-e-el and A-ho’li’ab in the building of the Tabernacle. “And I have filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship. That they make all that I have commanded thee. Ex 31 v 2/6

The walls of Jericho were said to be 15 feet thick, yet they fell when Israel shouted out the Victory shout of Faith. “So the people shouted when the priest blew the trumpets… and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat….”

 Joshua 6 v 20

The Hidden Things

And from thence he arose and went into the boarder of tyre and Sidon and entered into a house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid”. Mark 7 v 24

One of the favourite games of children is hide and seek. Children love the story of the hidden garden full of excitement mystery and hidden delights.

The Lord Jesus often sought isolation and wanted to be alone with his Father far away hidden from the throng of needy folks.

The world always seeks publicity and advertisement. Paul was in the desert regions of Syria for 14 years listening to God, and his Epistles are the evidence of the time having been spent profitably. Gal 1 v 15/17

In Kelvenden in Essex , there is disused wartime bunker, which was designed to be the control centre of the government in the event of a nuclear war. It was top secret and was kept secret for many years after the war. Hidden deep in the ground. Elijah was hiding in a cave, from the wrath of Jezebel 1 Kings 19 v 9

Noah was hidden in the Ark , shut in by God who protected him from the waters of judgement. Gen 7 v 15

Jonah on the other hand hid himself in a ship, well away from the eyes of God or so he thought.

Jonah 1 v 5

Zacheus too thought he was hidden in the tree, he had wanted a good view of Jesus, but the One who sees all soon discovered him. Luke 19 v 5

Rahab hid the spies on the roof under some reeds it saved her life and the life of her family.   Joshua 2 v 4

Hiding is very Scriptural. I love to hide away from the world and its ways and just spend time with the Lord. Talking and having fellowship with him. The Lord Jesus hid himself from his disciple on many occasions. Some may say,  “This was very strange behaviour.

“These things spake Jesus, and departed and did hide himself from them”. John 12 v 36

When he was wonderfully transfigured before Peter, James and John, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead”. Mark 9 v 9

It is a strange mystery and paradox that we are on the one hand the light of the world and yet we are hidden from it. “Your life is hid with Christ in God. Col 3 v 3

God loves this hidden man. “The hidden man of the heart” as Peter describes it.1 Peter 3 v 4

The Gospel was hidden from the Old Testament saints for generations, Even the mystery which hath been hid from generations, but is now made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make know what is the riches of his glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you the hope of glory. Col 1 v 26/27

Gifts of God

Perhaps God has gifted you with a special talent, for music, for preaching, for helping, for listening or counselling? Paul says, “Neglect not the gift that is in you”.1 Tim 4 v 14.

Who knows that today may be your last day? Today we all have an opportunity to help others to do some act of kindness, to pray for a needy soul or a needy nation in crisis. What wilt thou have me do? Acts 9 v 6.

God’s most neglected gift is Salvation. How grievous to see this loving costly gift unopened, neglected and ignored. Today is the day of Salvation, today the Holy Ghost says if you here my voice harden not your hearts,. Hebs 3 v 7/8. Today we can respond to God. To that still small voice that says , This is the way walk ye in it. Isaiah 30 v 21.

God’s gifts are the perfect gifts. Life, joy, peace, happiness, trust, faith, grace, For every good gift and perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning”. James 1 v17

Delight thyself in the Lord and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. What a gift?. Psalm 37 v 4

Ask and it shall be given thee. Gods promises are like a chequebook where you have unlimited credit. “For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. Cheques must be presented at the bank. The banks have the resources to pay out. So too with Gods promises, When we come and present our petitions to him, he has the resources to meet every need and to give us that which we desire. Rom 11 v 29

Have your tasted Gods unspeakable gift, the gift of the Holy Ghost, have you received the gift of eternal life?

“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him”.

2 Cor 9 v15.

“Then Peter said unto them, repent, and be baptised everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost’. Acts 2 v 38

Are you gifted? Yes you are! For the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the Word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit, to another faith …”

1 Cor 12 v 11

God warns us of neglecting his gifts. “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift…”Heb 6 v 4

“For the wages of sin is death. But the gift of God is eternal life.”

Rom 6 v 23.

What does Jesus say about gifts. “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him. Math 7 v 11.

Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift. 2 Cor 9 v 13

The Two sides of Peter

Then he began to curse and swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.” Peter was found out. Math 26 v 74

“And Peter remembered the words of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out and wept bitterly”. Math 26 v 75

Why suddenly is he cursing and swearing? A picture here of the absence of the indwelling Holy Spirit in Peter.

The old nature revealing himself in Peter. This is true when we operate in the flesh The Spirit giveth life the flesh profiteth little”. “Walk in the Spirit and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh” Gal 5 v 17

Peter who had been able to say by revelation from the Father “Thou art the Christ”, is now weeping from a broken heart. A broken spirit! “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise”. Psalm 51 v 17

Blessed art thou Simon Bar’jo’n: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto you, but my Father, which is in heaven”. No man can say that Jesus is Lord but by the Spirit”. Math 16 v 17

Peter, who the Lord was to use so much in the New Testament, is pictured here as vulnerable, and weak. The tragedy of his betrayal struck his heart and he left the scene and later when he thought it over he wept uncontrollably. Could he ever lift up his face again before God? Before the other disciples?

Mark 14 v 72

Has there been a time in your life when it has all gone wrong? When you failed miserably? When your testimony, so powerful in years gone by, suddenly, inexplicably, has let you down. Oh how gracious God is. How merciful. Peter was to discover within a few days that Gods mercies are new every morning. Meanwhile three days of turmoil, torture and misery as he contemplated his defeat. Why had he not spoken out why had he lied? Shame and mortification had filled his heart.

Then the message arrives. The tomb was empty an angel had said “Go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goes before you into Galilee and there you shall meet him as he said”.

Luke 6 v 7

Peter was restored after that horrible betrayal. What great plans God had for Peter. But we must all learn the lessons that God would teach us.

“Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men”. Acts 5v 29

Then he began to curse and swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.” Peter was found out. Math 26 v 74

Wells without water

These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom mist of darkness is reserved for ever”. 2 Peter 2 v 17

What a tirade, these false prophets rightly deserve, “Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children”. The false prophets have an outward appeal. They promise to provide water. From a distance all looks well. How do we match up? Do people have high expectations from us? Looking for that life giving water. “Out of your innermost being shall flow rivers of living water”. John 7 v 38

God is angry with the wicked every day! Thirsty folks come expectantly to the well. They bring their vessels to fill. In wartime Britain when the bombs had blown up the main water pipes, women queued with buckets and basins for their daily water. Imagine travelling miles with your buckets to a well and then finding it empty!

How quickly Israel complained when they arrived at Ma’rah. They expected good pure clean refreshing waters but the water was bitter. “And when they came to Ma’rah, they could not drink of the waters of Ma’rah, for they were bitter. Ex 15 v 23

The Lord is merciful he showed Moses a tree which he cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet. What is the lesson? The bitter waters of life, which Satan would force down us, are to be sweetened through the cross of Jesus. Ex 15 25

God had a blessing prepared as he always does for his people. Marah is just a stopping place. Israel walked on to the refreshing waters of Elim. Here there were twelve wells and palm trees with shade. A place to rest and re-gather strength.

Jesus himself tired from his journey sat resting on Jacobs well; he was thirsty but waited for a woman who would draw water for him. After ministering to her regarding he past life he told her, “Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again. But whoso drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst again”.

John 4 v 13/14

The Holy Spirit provides an inexhaustible supply of fresh water. You may draw more and more till your thirst is fully satisfied.. “Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of Salvation. Isaiah 12 v 3

What a privileged people we. Cool clear water in abundance.

Jesus Christ took the sting, took the poison out of life’s trials and trouble, so that we are able to bear them. “O taste and see that the Lord is good.

Psalm 34 v 8

How thirsty are you?

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness sake; for they shall be filled. Math 5 v 6

Alone with God

Jacob was alone with God. He was greatly distressed. Esau his angry brother, whom he deceived and stole his birthright was on his way with a band of 400 men. Jacob had wisely taken his precautions and arranged for his family to be divided into two groups. He had arranged for presents to be made as Esau approached. Yet for all this he was still afraid. What would Esau do? Gen 32 v 7 v 27

He was alone that night a wrestled with a man, an Angel, with God. And he obtained a blessing. “I will not let thee go unless thou bless me”. V 26

Jacob being alone with God obtained a blessing. “Thy name shall be no more called Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince thou hast power with God and with men and hast prevailed”. Gen 32 v 28

The disciples were alone with the Lord Jesus on the mount of transfiguration, “and they beheld his glory”. Luke 9 v 36.

Moses spent time alone with God on the mountain. Forty days and nights of fellowship, listening to God, waiting upon God, receiving from God. Without bread or water, God kept him and sustained him. God’s glory was revealed to him and he returned with that reflected Glory shining from his face. “And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses that the skin of Moses face shone: and Moses put the veil upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him. “Ex 24 v 17 Ex 34 v 35

Alone with God. How wonderful. To be alone with Jesus. Separated from the world and its clamour. When the disciple were alone with Jesus he expounded all things to them. “But with out a parable he spake not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples”. Ah to hear God speak. “Not in the fire, nor the mighty wind nor the earthquake, but a still small voice. 1 Kings 19 v 12

It is good to be alone praying with Jesus. And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?

Luke 9 v 18

And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. Math 14 v 23

Many older folks are afraid to be alone at night. But Christians are never alone. Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have, for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Hebrews 13 v 5.

Jeremiah was alone with God. I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation. Jeremiah 15 v 17

How long is it since you spent time alone with God. When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which seeth in secret; and thy Father, which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly”. Math 6 v 6

Incorruption

All my life I have battled against rust in cars. I have fought with it. My weapons have been fibreglass and latterly chemical solutions that are applied to the rust.

All these attempts at holding back corruption are only temporary. It almost always ends in failure, for sooner or later the rust reappears and greedily eats away until the car falls apart and soon visits the scrapyard. Oh for a rust free car!

When we are Born Again, by the power of Gods Spirit we are born of a spiritual and incorruptible seed. Seed that cannot be corrupted by sin or death. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God”. 1 John 3 v 10.

“He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption”. Acts 2 v 31

We born again Christians are still in the body; the flesh and we have the old nature of Adam within us. For many a Christian, the old nature Adam is neglected and to all intents and purposes dead. However until we reach Glory, the old nature can rear it ugly head and reappear from nowhere. And we sin, not willingly but fall into sin, through our foolish ways or neglect of prayer, or when we reach a weak and vulnerable point.

“Flesh and blood cannot inherit the of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed. In a twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. Here Gods word reveals something of that mystery. 1 Thess 4 v 15

While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. 2 Peter 2 v 19

The mystery of the incorruptible seed. Christ in me the hope of Glory. To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Colossians 1 v 27

For this corruptible must out on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory”. 1 Cor 15 v 50 v 58

Christ is the incorruptible seed. “And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness”. Rom 8 v 10

Oh dear Christian. “Blessed be God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again to a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. To an inheritance, incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you”. 1 Peter 1 v 4

Besieged

As a child I played cowboys and Indians. The cowboys were often portrayed on films and later on television as being surrounded by hostile, Indians. The covered wagons used by the cowboys would have been drawn into a circle as the attack began and the shots would ring out. The settlers would be besieged and would have to fight for their lives.

God has ways and means of defeating the mutinous and rebellious agents of the enemy of our souls, who may feel safe and secure in a walled city. “He that is afar off shall die of the pestilence; and he that is near shall fall by the sword and he that remaineth and is besieged: thus will I accomplish my fury upon them. Ezek 6 v 12

Jerusalem was often besieged. “And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city”. Isaiah 1 v 7

And lay siege against it, and build a fort against it, and cast a mount against it; set the camp also against it, and set battering rams against it round about. Ezekiel 4 v 2

So it is in the spiritual realm. We are often attacked and under siege. Circumstances and events bring us to as place where we feel we are unable to cope. The first blows we are able to manage but as continual and repeated blows hit us from this side and that we begin to realise we are vulnerable and floundering in our faith.

Thou shalt burn with fire a third part in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled. And thou shalt take a third part, and smite about it with a knife: and a third part thou shalt scatter in the wind; and I will draw out a sword after them. Ezekiel 5 v 2

When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them. For thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege. Deut 20 v 19

In the days of Isaiah when King Hezikiah reigned Jerusalem was besieged by Sen’nach’e’rib and the kings of Assyria but God intervened. “For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: …For I will defend this city to save it for my own sake and for my servant David’s sake”. Isaiah 37v 32/35

Jericho was under siege but this time it was Gods doing. The inhabitants were terrified as related by the harlot Rahab, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that your terror has fallen us, and that all the inhabitants of the land feint because of you. And as soon as we heard these things our hearts did utterly melt”. Joshua 2 v 9 v 10.

Rahab escaped from besieged Jerico.

Paul under threat of his life escaped from Damascus let down the wall of the city in a basket. Acts 9 v 25

Are you under siege?

Looking

And while they looked steadfastly towards heaven as he went up, behold two men stood by them in white apparel. Which also said, Ye men of Galilee why stand ye here gazing up into heaven. This same Jesus which was taken up from you into heaven will come in a like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. Acts 1 v 10/11

The disciples were looking up. That was good, they were looking at their Master, Jesus as he was leaving them.. Now the disciples of Jesus should be looking, with that expectant faith for his soon return. Watch and pray….God says, “Look unto me and be saved, all the ends of the earth: For I am God and there is none else Isaiah 45 v 22

Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter: I did mourn as a dove: mine eyes fail with looking upward.

Isaiah 38:14

Looking unto Jesus for Salvation. The thief on the cross, first looked at the broken body of the Lord Jesus and then seeing the Lamb of God cried out to him in prayer. Do we see the Lamb? John the Baptist saw Jesus and. “Looking upon him as he walked declared, Behold the Lamb of God”. John 1 v 36

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. Christians also look to Jesus, as the finisher of our Faith. Hebrews 12 v 2

He will perfect that which concerneth thee. Phil 1 v 6

The Holy Spirit opens our eyes that we may see the Lamb, identifying with him. As we gaze daily upon him by faith, illuminated in the Holy Scripture, we are changed, becoming like Him, in our thoughts, deeds and our attitudes. “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Ephes 4 v 13

As we look upon Jesus we are changed from Glory to Glory. “Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his Glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto Himself”. Phil 3 v 21.

Where are we looking? Are we looking back? “No man having put his hand to the plough and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” Luke 9 v 62

Are we looking on our circumstances? Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things, which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. Luke 21:26

Are we looking up? “Looking for and hasting unto the coming day of God, whereon the heavens being on fire, shall be dissolved and the elements shall melt with fervent heat. 1 Peter 3 v 12″

Looking for that blessed hope, and the Glorious appearing of the great God and of our Saviour Jesus Christ” Titus 2 v 13

Startling Questions

When they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these do? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee.

John 21 v 15

Why is there always a spoon left at the bottom of the washing up bowl when you have finished washing up? Startling questions

What does God have to do to get our attention? When he is speaking are we listening? Are we expecting God to speak? Will God speak today?

Moses got a surprise when God appeared in a burning bush and then spoke to him!” And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked and behold the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed”. Exodus 3 v 2 Acts 7 v 31.

And Moses asked God, “Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? Or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? Have not I the Lord? Exodus 4 v 11

Moses was afraid when an Israeli asked him this question, “Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? Intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known. Exodus 2 v 14

Children often ask questions, difficult questions.

Folks often came to Jesus with trick questions. And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? Mark 12 v 14

And Pharaoh asked, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go..

Ex 3 v 11

Startling questions. Did the above question catch your attention? What does God have to do to get your attention? Moses was wandering on the backside of the mountain when his attention focused on a bush. It was on fire. Then as he drew near God spoke.

I ask myself this question, “Is there anything in me that would attract folks to Jesus Christ”?

Is my light shining?. Am I reflecting something of the beauty of Jesus? I have met saints some elderly some young who are almost glowing with a radiance. A light shining in their faces that cannot be hidden. A Holy glow.

When the disciple of Jesus went forth to preach the people took note that they had been with Jesus. They were unlearned ignorant fishermen yet they were attractive. Praise God. Acts 4 v 13

Let me ask you this question? And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord? 1 Chronicles 29 v 5

The Wall

For he is our peace, who hath made us both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us”. Ephes 2 v 14.

In Belfast and in Berlin walls were built which separated communities. Taxi drivers would not cross the dividing line for fear of attack. In Communist East Germany many folks were shot as they tried to escape from East to West and to get over the wall.

There has always been in the Bible a seperation betweeen Jew and Gentile. Yet here in Ephesians Paul teaches something quite radical, that in Christ Jesus both Jew and Gentile are one. One in Christ. At Calvery the middle wall of partition was broken down. “And behold the veil of the Temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent”. Math 27 v 53.

The veil in the temple was torn apart. That veil which for centuries had seperated man, even the high priest from a Holy God was now torn asunder. “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water”.

Heb 10 v 22

But now in Christ Jesus, ye who sometimes were afar off, are made nigh by the blood of Christ”. Having broken down the wall, having abolished in his flesh the emnity. And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, Rom 11 v 16/ 30

When Solomon was building the Temple he made a partition to separate the Holy of Holies which contained the ark of testament. “So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold: and he made a partition by the chains of gold before the oracle; and he overlaid it with gold”. 1 Kings 6 v 21

Sin always seperates us from God. The most obedient, righteous, holy living Christian is immediately sperated from God when he sins. Our fellowship is broken, cut off. A wall seperates us from God.

Like the leprosy of old sin can be easily visble in the walls of our heart. And the priest shall come again the seventh day, and shall look: and, behold, if the plague be spread in the walls of the house. Leviticus 14 v 9

When we truly repent our fellowship is immediately restored and the wall is torn down. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1 v 9

Some people are always breaking down walls. And Jehoash King of Israel came to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits. 2 Kings 14 v 13

Others like Nehemiah wanted to rebuild the walls Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach. Nehemiah 2 v 17

Are you a master builder?

Hyssop

And he spake of tree’s, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon, even unto the Hyssop that springeth out of the wall: 1 Kings 4 v 33.

Hyssop is a little shrub with which the blood and the water were applied to cleanse a leper. The law stated that there were two birds were to be used. One was slain the other let go free.

The living bird was to be dipped into blood. “As for the living bird he shall take it, and the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the Hyssop, and shall dip them, and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over running water. And he shall sprinkle upon his that is to be cleansed from the leprosy seven times, and shall pronounce him clean, and let the living bird loose into an open field”.

Lev 14 v 6/7.

The bird slain and the bird loosed are types of Salvation. Christ was delivered for our offences and raised again for our justification”. Romans 4 v 25.

Here we have running water and blood. Blood is for the cleansing of a sinner. We are redeemed not with silver and gold but with the precious blood of Christ. Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins. The water speaks also of cleansing but this time it is for the sinning saint. We are clean through the Word. The washing of the water by the word. “He that is washed, says Jesus, needs only his feet to be rewashed. John 13 v 10.In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians are Paul told us that, “Christ loved the church and gave himself for it, that he might sanctify it and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word”. Ephes 5 v 25/26

When David sinned in the murder of Urriah the Hittite and the adultery with Bathsheba, he cried in true repentance, “Behold thou desirest truth in the inward parts. And in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean, wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. Psalm 51 v 6/7

God wants clean and holy people. Without holiness no man shall see the Lord. Heb 12 v 14

What does the Prophet Isaiah say? “Wash yourselves and make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes, cease top do evil. Come now let us reason together saith the Lord, though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow, and thought they be red like crimson they shall be as wool. Isaiah 1 v 16/18

When we are washed we in the blood we are cleansed from all known sin. As we walk daily in this sin cursed world we are defiled just walking by. So we need the daily cleansing of the water. Like our daily bathe. Ephes 5 v 26

Praise God for the hyssop for with it the blood and the water are applied. The daily confession and repentance of all defilement, in thought word and deed, and the application of the Word of God which keeps our conscience clear and beautiful before God and man.

Pain

Pain is first mentioned in the Bible in regard to childbirth. This was a direct result of sin, first mentioned as a result of Eve’s sin, the fall and the resultant curse. Look upon mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins. Psalms 25 v 18

As a child my first memories were the result of pain. Those first teething problems, the first boil, of cut or fall in the playground. The mother of course, having experienced all the pain of childbirth. “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Isaiah 49 v 15

Later when the children grow up and then leave home, separation causes pain. How awful it must have been for Joseph and Mary as the searched for their missing child. Luke 2 v 49

The prodigal sons father must have been in deep pain. He had allowed his son to go off, knowing perhaps what might happen, yet giving him his inheritance and saying goodbye to an ungrateful wayward son. Yet the father remained faithful, waiting, watching with a broken heart no doubt, for the eventual return of his son. When the Son returned the pain was over. “It was right that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again, and was lost and is found”.

Luke 15 v 32.

Some folks have a low pain threshold but few of us escape pain in one form or another. God was knew pain. Yes when God saw what his beautiful creation had become when there was no restraint to the wickedness and corruption in Noah’s generation God knew the pain of love. He loved his creation for when he had completed his work he said, “It was good”. So it grieved God when he saw the awful effects of sin.

“And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. Can we imagine a broken hearted God? Gen 6 v 6

How dreadful when you come across a bird with a broken wing, or an animal tapped in some wire. How awful to sit at the bedside of a child knowing they are in pain when you are unable to intervene, feeling useless. Could God be afflicted with our pain in His Glory?

Our heavenly Father, our creator God is affected when we are in pain.. ” For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin”. Heb 4 v 15

For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. Rom 8 v 22

“And he shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and death shall be no more; neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more: the first things are passed away”. Revelation 21 v 4

His glorious name

For mine own names sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? And I will not give my glory to another”. Isaiah 48 v 11.

As a child in school the first task the teacher performed every day was the register of names. Each child responding to its own name. “Yes miss.

In the book of Chronicles, the first eight chapters a full record of the genealogy is written with the tribes of Israel, Adam, Seth, Enoch, Ke’nan, Ma’ha’lae’el, Je’red, Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Good and bad are all named. The good looking and ugly are named. The rich and poor are named. The righteous and wicked are named. 1 Chron 1 to 8

As a youth when I joined the Merchant navy I was required to carry an identity card with my fingerprints on it together with my name and number. My name identified me. Today in this computer world with technology the my identity would be more likely a DNA test.

Many people are ashamed of their name. Imagine those Nazi Gestapo murderers, hiding in Argentina fleeing justice, and the arm of the law. The one thing they feared was being discovered, and identified.

In the roll call at the prison camps in Japan, during the Second World War, many a deception was practised to hide the non-appearance of an escaped prisoner. The roll call would be repeated and repeated while exhausted men had to respond to their names being called out.

“When Jacob wrestled with the Angel of the Lord, the Lord spoke to him “Dost thou ask after my name” Gen 32 v 29

Moses warned the people as they wandered in the wilderness, “Behold I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him Ex 23 v 20/ 21

Jesus asked the demonised man “what is thy name? The answer he received was, My name is Legion; for we are many.

Mark 5 v 9

Who would have Judas as his name?

The name of Jesus is often used as an expletive. Yet to those who know and love him His name is precious. His name is higher than any other, His name is Jesus, His name is Lord.

Therefore my people shall know my name, therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak. Behold it is I”.

Isaiah 52 v 6.

Has He called you by your name?

Stepping stones to glory

As a child I had a traumatic time. I will not go into details but looking back on it I am neither bitter nor angry. I can truly say that it has helped me to cope with the daily trials with calmness and peace. Love suffers long, and is kind; love envieth not. 1 Cor 13 v 4.

Suffering is the road to Glory. ” For it is better if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing. 1 Peter 3 v 17.”

Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf”. 1 Peter 4 v 15

This concept of suffering for Glory is strange and alien to us. Yet we see in the Scriptures example after example of suffering as stepping stones to Glory.

King David was on his face praying all night to God when the baby died he got up and washed and ate and got on with life. God had judged his sin

He did not get bitter with God. He did not rail on God. “Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed, himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the Lord and worshipped: 2 Sam 12 v 20

His servants questioned him. They did not understand. David told them “While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether God will be merciful to me, that the child may live? But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall I go to him, but he shall not return to me”.

2 Sam 12 v 21/23

Joseph was in the pit, sold into slavery by his own brothers and in Egypt was thrown into prison after false charges against him were believed. Yet he rose to great position and authority under Pharaoh, and was the means of saving Israel in the famine. “And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the Kings prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison. But the Lord was with Joseph, and showed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

Gen 39 v 20/21

Job a righteous man before God that Satan accused and the Lord allowed his health and family to be destroyed. Yet he did not become bitter. He could say, The Lord has given the Lord has taken away For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth. Though worms eat this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God”. Job 19 v 25/26

Many saints have travelled on this mysterious road of suffering, but on looking back can see the hand of God is clearly visible. The Lord had laid out stepping stones to allow us to cross this terrible void.

The Lord Jesus told his followers to take up their cross to follow him. He hung on the cross, the sinless one, showing us the way to Glory. 1 Peter 2 v 21

Love or judgment

How can a loving God allow such things to happen? It is not easy to comprehend that an all powerful, Almighty God would sit back as it were, and allow humane nature to take its course. We can sore to hights of sacrificial love or to wallow in awful evil sin. God allows both

When an angry woman came to me in Folkstone pointing the finger at the preacher shouting, “Why doest God do something about Bosnia” It was easily answered. Who is raping the women? God or man? Who is pulling the trigger? God or Man?

When it comes to personal suffering, the cancer eating away at a loved one. The flesh deteriorating before your eyes of a soul who has trusted in God and shown forth good works of kindness and charity all their lives. When in comparison the murderer the drug trafficker, the child abuser, live in luxury, well away from any justice. Many people get angry.

Of course there will be a day of reckoning. Sometimes wish it would happen immediately, so those who commit awful atrocities could receive their just rewards. It is strange in the Bible we see immediate judgement as in the case of Miriam. She had rebelled with her brother Aaron against Moses and the Lord had stricken her with leprosy. She was in disgrace outside the camp for 7 long days. All Israel knew of her sin. Numbers 12 v 10

In contrast in the New Testament the woman caught in the very act of adultery was not condemned. Jesus said he that is without sin, let him be the first to cast the stone. She walked away free.” Neither do I condemn thee, go and sin no more John 8 11.

Again the woman at the well was not condemned. Jesus knew all about her sin but after her illuminating conversation with Jesus she became an evangelist and returned to the village to tell others, “the woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith unto the men. Come, and see a man which told me all things that I ever did: Is this not the Christ.

John 4 28/29

Yet the Lord Jesus vilified the Scribes and the Pharisee’s and condemned them outright for their hypocrisy. “Woe to you ye Scribes and Pharisee’s Hypocrites for ye devour widow’s houses, and for pretence make a long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation”. Math 23 v 14

God is Just. He will do justly. Shall not the judge of all the earth do right? “Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked? Perhaps there are 50 righteous in the city”. Gen 18 v 23

I believe this is why judgement is reserved unto a special day. “Fear God for the hour of his judgement is come”. Rev 14 v 7

In wrath remember mercy. Hab 3 v 2

Faith

A life of faith is Gods purpose for our earthly sojourn. We are pilgrims and strangers, passing through this earthly scene yet we are to learning faith.

“For without faith it is impossible to please God”.

Romans 14 v 23

The faith of the blind men. And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us”. Jesus asked them a question, “Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea Lord. Then touched he their eyes saying, According to your faith be it unto you. Math 9 v 27/29

We are justified by faith. Therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God”. Rom 5 v 1

Let us look at the father of the faithful Abraham. When he was called, he went, not knowing where he was going. He sojourned in a land of promise. Heb 11 v 9

He looked by faith he saw stars and believed that God was able to multiply his seed as the stars of the sky. Gen 15 v 16. Heb 11 v 10.

He staggered not at the promise of God. He obeyed God in the most wonderful way willing and able to lay his only son on the altar to be slain, believing that God was able to raise him up from the dead. Heb 11 v 21. Romans 4 v 19/20.

I believe that God’s faithfulness can only be proved through testing times. He leads us up to the wire. The very edge of the abyss and this finds out our faith. Right to the edge, where there is no possibility of human help.

Steel is made in a furnace. Diamonds are prised out of deep in the rock. The saint who has been tried in the fire of affliction is a person that you can trust.

Shadrack, Mesheck and Abednigo came through the fire without a smell of burning. They proved God. “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand O king. But if not, be it know unto thee O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image, which thou hast set up”.

Dan 3 v 17/18

Living a life of faith is a powerful testimony because faith shines out in this darkened world. How many of my neighbours have come to my home to pour out their troubles and woes. They explain you are the only people we know who could help us. It is not that we have all the answers to their problems, but they recognise we do have faith.

We must ask ourselves. Lord how much faith do I have? What is its quality? Surely like the disciples of old we too would cry, Lord increase our faith.

Luke 17 v 5

Demonised

For many years the fear of a dog infected with rabies has kept a strict regime of quarantine for animals entering this county. Mad cow disease brought fear to many and has ruined the British beef industry.

In the time of Jesus ministry, demons were a common place thing. Today the church seems paralysed by the thought that any human being in civilised Britain could become demonised.

I was shocked when a man entered my home in great fear and later as I prayed with him and mentioned the name of Jesus this demon manifested itself. The man started to squirm, his body contorting and writhing; while out of his mouth came an awful, blood chilling, evil, anguish and terror.

“And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out. Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth?. And Jesus rebuked him, saying Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him”.

Mark 1 v23/25

The Bible Gods word tells in that especially in the last days, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times, some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils. 1 Tim 4 v 1

The demonised man at Garderene was legion. No man that could control him, no chain could restrain him for he snapped them like a man breaks a biscuit. Jesus the Lord, was never surprised by their appearance. The deaf and dumb man was in control of a demon.

Once a demonised woman started to squirm and contort like a snake in front of the preacher. It was a horrible sight and one that I would not choose the see again. Evil spirits can enter when a door is opened through involvement in the occult, drug abuse, or pornography And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul….and the evil spirits went out of them”. Acts 19 v 11/12

A strange thing in Gods word is the fact of Gods involvement. What can this mean? When Samuel the prophet anointed David in place of King Saul we find. “But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him”.

1 Sam 16 v 14

We catch a glimpse of this enigma also in another place in Gods Word. Then came out a spirit, and stood before the Lord, and said I will entice him. And the Lord said wherewith? And he said I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.

2 Chron 18 v 20/22

We should learn the lesson that we are not only fighting in the physical world but also in the real unseen world of principalities and powers. Ephes 6 v 12

Illumination

Torn Clothes

As a child, I often dreaded returning home after I had torn my clothing. . Having been in some imaginary war with my brother, playing cowboys and Indians, some clothing invariably got torn. This inevitably led to a good telling off or worse, a clout around the ear.

“And it was so that when Elisha the man of God had heard that the King of Israel had torn his clothes, that he sent to the King saying, Wherefore has thou rent thy clothes?

Let him come now to me, and he shall know there is a prophet in Israel.

2 Kings 5 v 8

In wartime Britain, bandages were made from old sheets torn up into strips. These are still used today for the poorer countries. My wife recently prepared some for Africa.

I wonder did the Roman soldiers on that crucifixion squad, realise they were keeping the prophecy of Joel when he said, “Turn even to me with all your heart, and with fasting and with weeping, and with mourning. And rend your heart not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God”. Joel 2 v 12/13 ”

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it but cast lots for it, whose it shall be, that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things the soldiers did.

John 19 v 23/24

A torn ligament can be very painful and would take a long time to heal. I often watch as my wife patiently repairs a badly torn shirt or trousers. . Imagine heaven torn in two. “Oh that thou would rend the heavens, that thou would come down, that the mountains might flow at thy presence”.

Isaiah 64 v 1

How are your clothes today? Are your smartly dressed? God looks upon the heart. Elijah was dressed in a skin like John the Baptist. “For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet E-sa’ias, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. And the same John had his raiment of camels hair, and a leather girdle about his loins; and his meat was locust and wild honey”.

Math 3 v 4

“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags: and we all do fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away”. Isaiah 64 v 6

One of the sad duties of bereaved folks is to find homes for the good clothing, now not used, not ever now needed by the loved one who has died. Those with a little tear in them will no doubt be thrown away, but those in good condition will be recycled to others in need.

Do your clothes need a stitch or two? Perhaps you need garments of praise? Isaiah 61 v 3

Solomon’s Prayer

Solomon had made a scaffold, 3 cubits high and set it in the midst of the court: and upon it he stood, and kneeled down upon his knee’s, before all the congregation of Israel, and spread his hands towards heaven and prayed this public prayer.

O Lord our God of Israel, there is no God like thee in the heaven, not in the earth, which keepest covenant and shewest mercy unto thy servants, which walk before thee with all their hearts”.

Many of today’s rulers, Prime ministers and presidents make speeches and public declarations. Few if any make public prayer. The whole nation stood before Solomon. His servants, his loved one’s, his army chiefs, and his administrators.

Solomon was a great and mighty King but he prayed a humble prayer God had given him his request for wisdom to rule over Israel. There was no kingdom like unto Solomon’s kingdom, in riches and wealth. The queen of Sheba travelled far to see and was left with no spirit within her. 2 Chron 9 v 6

Solomon calling upon God upon his knees. Solomon knew how mighty God is “There is no God like thee. Almighty, creator of heaven and the earth..

“He knew that God is a covenant keeping God. God is not a liar. He does not change. “Thou which hast kept with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him; and speakest with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is with thee this day”. v 15

Solomon reminded God and asked him to keep that promise. “Now therefore O Lord God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him” v 16

He confessed the sins of Israel. “And if thy people Israel be put to worse before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee; and shalt return and confess thy name, and pray and make supplication before thee in this house. When the heaven is shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against thee”. V 24/26.

Solomon got to the root of the nation’s problems in his public prayer; Sin is the cause of the defeat. We too have to get to the root. To confess that our defeats are due to hidden sin and open sin in the nation in the camp

His faith. “Then thou hear from heaven, even from thy dwelling place. Solomon expected a response. He knew that God was merciful and that God would abundantly pardon, when there was a true repentance and a willingness to resituate. Put things right.

2 Chron 6 v 39

God rewarded Solomon “Now when Solomon had made an end of praying the fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the house”.  2 Chron 7 v 1

Seven Times

Seven in Gods word represents God’s special number. The creation of the universe took seven days and everywhere God reminds us in his word of the special significance of the number.

There were seven amazing day’s of creation. Miracles of beauty and wonder, being formed as God spoke His Word. It was on the seventh day that God rested from all his works, which he saw, were good. “And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. The seventh day is sanctified by God. Gen 2 v 3

Elijah had prophesied that rain would come. “Get thee up, eat and drink for there is a sound of abundance of rain”. Another prophecy of faith. However not just a passive faith Elijah had to cast himself down with his face between his knee’s and pray. 1 Kings 18 v 42

In actual fact it was as dry and dusty and parched as it had been previously. So there on the mountain he told his servant to go and look towards the sea, and he went up and there was nothing”.

What great faith was needed at this hour? And Elijah said, “Go again”. . Seven times. “Go again”

1 Kings 18 v 43

His faith was well rewarded. And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. At first no evidence of rain, then a little cloud, How would we have done? Seven times, “Go again”. Would we throw in the towel after our first petition?

The walls of Jerico were very thick, impregnable.. God gave Joshua these instructions. “The seven shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of ram’s horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priest shall blow with the trumpets. Encompass the walls seven days and on the seventh day seven times.

Joshua 6 v 4

Strangely when Elisha hurried back to the Shu’nem woman’s dead child, after he had laid upon the dead child and the child was warm, he walked up and down, to and fro. Then he went up to where the child lay ,stretched himself upon it and the child revived. “And the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes”. Seven times. Gods Holy number. 2 Kings 4 35

Joash the King of Israel was denied the complete victory when he only struck the arrow heads three times. 2 Kings 13 v 19

I have often walked around my Gospel van seven times, praying pleading the blood of Jesus for protection. Should we not be pleading with God for our town’s cities walking around them by faith, seven times? Praying, “Lord set the captives-free”.

Darkness

A horror of great Darkness “And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon A’bram, an lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him. Gen 15 v 12

One of the plaques in Egypt was darkness, And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.

Exodus 10 v 21

I was brought up in the blitz. The bombing of English cities and towns led to the blackout. “Put out that light was a common expression used as a command by the street warden or home guard. Often we were in fear in the dark, as the air raid sirens sounded, and we would wait for the enemy bombers or doodle-bugs to come and drop their lethal cargo.

Children would develop a phobia of the dark. Imagining monsters and awful creepy things happening in the darkness. What was this horror of darkness that Abram experienced? God had spoken to A’bram and given him a promise. “And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now towards heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, so shall thy seed be…. Gen 15 v 5

A’bram had been in a deep sleep he awoke to darkness. God spoke to him again. God told him his seed should be in slavery in Egypt for 400 years….Who was holding that lamp? What was happening? God was confirming his covenant with A’bram. God answers by fire.

“In the same day the Lord made a covenant with A’bram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river Eu-phra’tes”. Gen 15 v 2/18

In medieval England the Lord of the castle would often throw a miscreant into a dungeon, where in total darkness they would live like rats God is light and in him is no darkness. 1 John 1 v 5.

We were like those prisoners in a dungeon. We were in great darkness, we were the blinded.

“In whom the god of this world had blinded, lest the glorious light of the gospel should shine unto us. 2 Cor 4 v 4

But now, blood bought Christian, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.

1 Peter 2 v 9.

No Mighty Work’s

And he could do there no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folks and healed them. Mark 6 v 4/5

It seems inconceivable that the Lord of all creation could not do any mighty works for the Lord Jesus, created all things. “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in the earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, dominions, or principalities, or powers, all things were created by him, and for him

Col 1 v 16

Is it possible that God was hindered? If so what was the hindrance? Now we know there is nothing impossible to God. “Is anything to hard for the Lord”

Gen 18 v 14

Of course not. But in the sense of performing great miracle among these unbelieving people, it would be like casting pearl before swine. Math 7 v 6.

Were they like the rich man, who died and was in torment, even if they had someone return to them from the dead, the Lord knew that they would not believe. “And he said “Nay father Abraham; but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto them, If they hear not Moses, and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded; though one rose from the dead. Luke 16 v 30/31

This Scripture confirms that it was possible that Jesus was hindered and the cause of the problem was unbelief. Lack of faith. Unbelief was the stumbling block. “And he marvelled at their unbelief”. For the Lord to be amazed staggered at their lack of faith reveals a lot. How little we can do without that ingredient. How many of our prayers, works are done with the missing ingredient of faith. No wonder there is few mountains that are removed by faith and prayer.. Mark 6 v 6″

But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country and among his own kin, and in his own house.

Mark 6 v 5

When the Centurion came to plead with Jesus for his daughter who was, now even dead, Jesus had responded and come to the house where the body lay. He said, Give place: for the maid is not dead but sleepeth”. And they laughed him to scorn”. Was this a different scepticism? Were these people in the same degree of unbelief? They’re laughing bravado? Perhaps?

Math 9 v 24

Recently a church did a questionnaire for the parishioners. Did they believe in the literal truth of the Bible, in the creation, did they believe in the resurrection, the virgin birth, the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus? Many did not believe and had their own interpretation or thoughts. In many ways we have become a nation of doubting Thomases.

“Believeth thou this? Jesus speaking to Martha. “This sickness in not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby” .John 11 v4/ 26

Heaven Opened

And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the last seven plaques, for in them is filled up the wrath of God”. Rev 15 v 1

A terrible scene of the seven last plagues of the wrath of God that are to be poured out on the earth. A strange scene where those who had gotten the victory over the beast and his image and over his mark and over the number of his name stand on a sea of glass having harps in their hands and they sing the song of Moses. Rev 15 v 2/3

God revealed to John on Patmos strange and marvellous things. He saw the temple of God opened. ” And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament, and the voices, and thunderings, and the earthquake and great hail”. Rev 11 v 19.

Heaven was opened when the Lord Jesus returned in triumph from the earth. Now exalted and glorified to sit at the right hand of his Father. Heaven is opened for repenting sinners who believe on Jesus Christ and receive him. “But as many as received him, to them he gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name”. John 1 v 12

What a reception is awaiting the redeemed saints of the Lord? “To the thief on the cross Jesus said, Today thou shalt be with me in paradise”. The father of the prodigal son, called for the fatted calf to be slain, for the robe, a ring and a feast when his errant son returned in repentance confessing his sin.

“Father I have sinned against heaven and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the father said unto his servants, bring forth the best robe, and put it on him, and a ring upon his hand, and shoes upon his feet. And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it: and let us eat and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again: he was lost and is found. And they began to make merry”.

Luke 15 21/24

Will God do any less for his ransomed, blood bought children?

“In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you and if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself, for where I am there you may be also”.

John 14 v 2’3

Jacob saw the angels ascending and descending on a ladder, which reached up to heaven.

Gen 28 v 12

The mighty powerful angel, Gabriel was hindered by the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood him when the visited Daniel after three weeks of prayer, they ministered to Jesus in the wilderness, in the garden of Gethsemene, to Mary, to the watching shepherds. Such an activity with heavens door opened as they came and went. Dan 10 v 13

Have you seen heaven opened?

Betrayed

Betrayal hurts us deeply. When Judas kissed Jesus in the garden the Lord was not surprised. He knew it would happen, in fact it was planned.

At the Last Supper the Lord Jesus told the disciple that one of them would betray him. “Behold the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed.

Luke 22 v 21/22

Betrayal is the work of the devil. “Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priest and captains, how he might betray him unto them.

Luke 22 v 3

The betrayal of Jesus was worse by the method. Hail Master and a kiss. Judas lacked the courage to denounce Jesus outright. He also needed the support of a whole multitude. Luke 22 v 47

David was in Ziglag because of Saul’s persecution and many men came to him. Could he trust them? Were they spies or true men? “If ye come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing their is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look thereon and rebuke it.

1 Chron 12 v 14. I

Brother shall betray brother. Mark 13 v 21

In Nazi Germany many Jews were betrayed by their friends and family. They went to the gas chambers betrayed by those they had trusted.

Betrayal in wartime, treason, was always punished by death. God did not have to punish Judas. His kiss to Jesus, his awful betrayal of his master in the garden convicted him. He tried desperately to recover the situation by returning the silver. But it was too late. His evil deed had been done.

Betrayal. It was my friend. “For it was not An enemy that reproached me: then I could have bourne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me: then would I have hid myself from Him. But it was thou a man of my equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together and walked into the house of God in company.

Psalm 55 v 12/14

King David allowed seeds of rebellion to be sown when his son Ab’sa’lom raped his daughter without remonstrating and chastising him. Ab’sa’lom thought he could take over the kingdom without resistance. He conspired to win the peoples hearts and obtained permission to go to Hebron where he set up his kingdom.

The result was that King David fled in ignominy from Jerusalem by the treachery and betrayal of his own son. A tragic story. Sam 15 1/37

Master is it I?

Rewards

Behold I come quickly: and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last”. Rev 22 v 12 /13

What is our work for Jesus? Is it preaching, teaching? Healing the sick, or prayer? Mary washed Jesus fee. Martha served. Judas carried the bag? ” God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love which ye have showed towards his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints and do minister. Heb 6 v 10

Works are important to God, for God’s Word states,” What doth it profit; my brethren, though a man say he have faith, and hath not works, can faith save him. Even so faith, if it hath not works is dead, being alone”? I believe we are saved to serve and that works will automatically follow. Our works will be tried in the fire, and the wood hay and stubble will be burned up. James 2 v 14/17 1 Cor 3 v 13

When the Lord spoke to Abraham he mentioned reward. “After these things the word of the Lord came to Abraham in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield and exceeding great reward”. Gen 15 v 3/5

One of the rewards for the righteous is that we shall see the justice of God. “The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous, verily he is a God that judgeth the earth”. Psalm 58 v 11

Behold the Lord God will come with a strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold his reward is for him and his work before him”. Isaiah 40 v 10

Of course we do not work for reward, we work because the Lord leads and guides to do these things, we work to be faithful and obedient servants, we work like the Lord Jesus did, ministering to souls, pouring in the oil and the wine and washing the feet. Expecting no reward or gain. “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest for he is kind to the unthankful and to the evil”. Luke 6 v 35

I firmly believe that we also reap what we sow. If we sow to the flesh we shall reap corruption, if we sow to the Spirit we shall reap everlasting life. The thief on the cross, had the wisdom to realise this”. Luke 23 v 40/41

God is righteous, God is just. “Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one, and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. And whatsoever you do, do it heartily as to the Lord, and not unto men. Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward. Of the inheritance, for ye serve the Lord Christ”. 1 Cor 3 v 8 /24

Quickly

In many areas of life speed is imperative. When you see the traffic rushing by in Rome, Madras, Paris, or London, speed is necessary for life and limb to be preserved. “Arise up quickly”. I have often watched with bated breath the Royal tournament when the sailors compete to get gun carriages across an imaginary gulf. The speed and accuracy with which those young men operated was magnificent.

Peter was in chains in prison in a deep sleep when he had a sudden unexpected visitor. And behold an angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison, and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up saying” Arise up quickly, and his chains fell off from his hands”. Act 12 v 5

Lots family tarried and tarried. Procrastinating and delaying. Only the quick action of the angels in taking their hands and their insistence and repeated warnings saved them from destruction. When an avalanche is descending upon you need to get out of the way quickly. Gen 19 v 16

At this time, I feel very much like that man. Action is needed urgent action. “So the servant came and showed his Lord these things. Then the master of the house said to his servant,” Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed and the halt, and the blind……and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled”. Luke 14 v 21/23

A condemned man may also desire quick action. He wants the deed to be done, and finished with. It is not the time to delay. Jesus told Judas to get on with it. “And after the sop Satan entered him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly”. John 13 v 27

There is a moment when we must act and act quickly. Abraham had unexpected guest he hurried himself and urged her to prepare a meal for them. “And Abraham hastened to the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth. And Abraham ran unto the heard, and fetch a calf tender and good, and gave it to the young man, and he hasted to dress it”. All three Abraham Sarah and the young servant were all getting things done quickly.

Paul testified that the Lord spoke to him in a vision when he returned to Jerusalem. “And I saw saying unto me. “Make haste and get there quickly out of Jerusalem.

Acts 22 v 18

Are we to do Gods work at a leisurely pace, to linger and tarry? Are we to creep along as on a zimmer like an old lady. Would a marathon runner having completed twenty miles fail on entering the stadium to complete the last lap?

Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. Let us strike while the iron is hot .Let us thrust in the sword, let us rise up quickly.   Rev 3 v 11

The Messenger

Every Christmas at 3 PM on Christmas day many folks sit down to watch and listen to the Queens message from Buckingham palace. During the Second World war, Churchill’s messages and speeches inspired the nation to face up to unpleasant news. God gave him a gift of communication.

“The King is dead, long live the King”. How many messengers can you remember? Do you remember who told you that President Kennedy had been shot?

What messenger brought you news of Princess Diana’s death in a car crash? Can you remember the messenger who first told you of Jesus and Salvation? Sometimes we remember the message but forget the messenger.

Can you trust them? Can you believe them? Isaiah came to King Hezikiah with these words from God, “Set thine house in order for thou shalt die and not live”.

Isaiah 38 v 1

Jeremiah the prophet of God had to tell out his forthright message. He felt totally inadequate “Then said I Ah, Lord God! Behold I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the Lord said unto me. Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command, thou shalt speak”.

Jer 1 v 6/7

John the Baptist however was bold and uncompromising from the start. “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world”. John 1 v 29

Our present day messengers seem so ineffectual. I wonder why?

The Lord often used angels to tell out Good news. ” Fear not Mary: for thou haste found favour with God. And behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be called great and shall be called the Son of the highest: and the Lord thy God shall give unto him the throne of his father David. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever: and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Luke 1 v 30/33

Gad, was another messenger that God sent to King David when he presumptuously numbered the people. ” For when David was up in the morning the word of the Lord came unto the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying, Go and say unto David, Thus saith the Lord, I offer you three things, choose one of them that I may do it unto thee”.

2 Sam 24 v 11/121

I had the privilege to stand on the platform in Trafalgar Square in London, and proclaimed the message of Salvation. We must tell t how great things the Lord has done for us “… Mark 5 v 1
